Debutant Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) ensured India of their first boxing medal at Tokyo Olympics 2021 when she upstaged former world champion, Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei, to open the semifinals today.
The 23-year-old Assam boxer controlled 4-1 to make the last four where she will square off against prevailing world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, who beat Anna Lysenko in her quarterfinal bout.
Borgohain, a two-time world championship bronze medallist, demonstrated great calm in the face of a brave opponent, who had knocked out her in history. She was determined to start with, supported it up with a great counter-attacking game and held her defence tight in the final three minutes to appear successful.
